A sitemap is actually a page which contains links to all the other pages which are available on the website and therefore, it is appropriately called as the sitemap as it can be considered as a map of the website. The sitemap displays the structure of the website, various sections available on the website, the links between them and so, it is appropriately termed as sitemap.

A sitemap is useful for the users and also for the search engines. Once you have created a sitemap, you need to upload it on your site and you may even add a link to it from the homepage. Once you have uploaded the sitemap on the site, you may even submit it to the Google Webmaster Tools account and this will help you to get your site indexed properly. If you see any errors in the account then you can fix them by checking the sitemap. Sitemaps are also useful in fixing the problem of broken internal links. An up-to-date sitemap combined with external links will keep sending search engine crawlers to crawl and index the site.

So, it is not necessary to maintain a sitemap on the website but because of the number of advantages which it offers, it is becoming a standard to maintain a sitemap on the website. Therefore, considering the number of advantages of the sitemap, a webmaster should maintain an up-to-date sitemap on the website.
